  • Description

Peruvian President of the Council Ernesto Montagne arrived in Brussels yesterday (17 June) on an official visit to Belgium.

A large crowd watched President Montagne's plane arrive at Brussels-National airport. As he descended from the aircraft, he was welcomed by M.G. Eyskens, the Belgian Prime Minister, the Minister of Development M. Soheyven, and Major-General I.F.M., M. Collet, Director of the Defence Research Centre.

The President is in Belgium to negotiate the sale of arms to his country, in his capacity as Peru's Minister of War. Many of his engagements during the visit have military flavour. On his first day in Brussels, he called on the Belgian Minister of National Defence, M. Segers, and later visited the Wellington Museum and the panorama of the Battle of Waterloo. Today, he is inspecting the parachute training Centre, at Schaffen, and then the Defence Research Centre.

President Montagne left Peru on Friday (14 June), but broke his journey at New York, where it is thought he discussed the expropriation of the assets of the International Petroleum Company, which has created some tension between the United States and Peru. On Sunday at the end of his five day visit, the President flies on to London.
