  • Description

THE WORLD'S LARGEST SHIP SAILED INTO TOKYO BAY LAST TUESDAY TO BE HANDED OVER TO HER OWNERS AFTER BEING COMPLETED AT THE SASEBO SHIPYARDS IN KYUSHU. SHE IS THE TANKER "NISSHO MARU" - A GIANT OF 132,000 TONS DEADWEIGHT.

LAUNCHED THREE MONTHS AGO, THE "NISSHO MARU" IS GOING INTO SERVICE WITH THE IDEMITSU KOSAN COMPANY, ONE OF JAPAN'S LARGEST OIL REFINING ENTERPRISES RUN BY ONE OF THE COUNTRY'S RICHEST MEN. SAZO IDEMITSU, ALREADY OPERATING TWO 110,000-TONS TANKERS, PAID MORE THAN 25 MILLION FOR THE LATEST ADDITION TO HIS OIL SHIPPING FLEET.

WITH A LENGTH OF 955 FT. AND A WIDTH OF 141 FT., THE "NISSHO MARU" IS TOO BIG TO PASS THROUGH THE SUEZ AND PANAMA CANALS. SHE WILL PLY BETWEEN JAPAN AND THE PERSIAN GULF, CARRYING A FULL LOAD OF 125,000 TONS OF CRUDE OIL FROM KUWAIT TO TOKOYAMA ABOUT EIGHT TIMES A YEAR.

BECAUSE OF HER 54 FT. DRAUGHT, SHE RELIES ON SUBMARINE PIPELINES FOR OFF-SHORE LOADING AND UNLOADING. THE "NISSHO MARU" IS POWERED BY A SINGLE 28,000 HORSEPOWER TURBINE DRIVING A 24 FT. PROPELLER. HER CRUISING SPEED IS 16.5 KNOTS. SHE SAILS FOR KUWAIT NEXT TUESDAY (OCTOBER 16).
