COMM: "Despite its spectacular crash at the Paris airshow the first wing of A-10 'tank killers' will become operational at Merle Beach Airforce Base South Carolina July 1st. The worldwide logistic support mission for the A-10 has been assigned to the Sacramento Air Logistics Centre at Maquellen (spelling?) Airforce base where employees recently got their first good look at the aircraft.... 3 A-10's on their way to the Pacific..... for a tour of US airforce bases..... for a.. brief re-fuelling stop - over and to provide a briefing for some 200 maintenance personnel.........The A-10 is really and aircraft built to run a canon, a 30mm gatling (?) gun that can destroy tanks & other vehicles..It is easily maintained & ensures maximum 'survivability' through self-sealing fuel tanks, titanium armour plate to protect the pilot and back-up systems for flight control. The Airforce thinks so much of the new close support aircraft, it is planning to order 733 of them...it thinks it's the answer to the massive, adverse imbalance of armour between NATO & the Warsaw Pact nations in central Europe."
