Soccer...and in the most stunning finish to an English Football Association (F.A.) Cup final in years, the London club Arsenal, with a goal one minute from time, triumphed 3-2 over Manchester United at Wembley on Saturday (12 May). Arsenal, last year's beaten finalists, appeared to be cruising to a comfortable 2-0 win with only three minutes left. But suddenly United, seemingly a spent force, unleashed a blistering counter attack that sent their previously subdued fans wild with delight.

SYNOPSIS: Arsenal kicked off in the first half and seemed determined to overcome the battle of nerves which saw them end as losers to Ipswich last year. Just 12 minutes into the match and a loose ball is capitalised on by Brian Talbot to put Arsenal ahead 1-0.

United tried for the quick equaliser but this attempt by Gordon McQueen was ruled to be hand ball.

Ireland's Liam Brady for Arsenal was to become the difference between the two sides. On this occasion his run and clean cross set up Arsenal's second goal for Frank Stapleton.

In the second half it was Arsenal who started the strongest. But the attack faltered when young Manchester goalkeeper, Gary Bailey, managed to clear the ball from danger.

United with a reputation to comeback in a big match had to wait for their first goal. In the eighty six minutes, from a free kick Joe Jordan lays it one for Gordon McQueen to score.

Just two minutes later Sammy McIlroy brought the crowd of a hundred thousand to their feet, when after a brilliant solo run he pushed the ball past Arsenal 'keeper Pat Jennings to put the score level at two all.

But then came Arsenal's clincher. A minute from time man of the match Brady masterminded the attack and Rix crossed for Alan Sunderland to score a dramatic goal.

A triumphant 3-2 victory to the London side Arsenal and their right to receive the prestigious cup from His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales.
