  • Description

As part of the Vietnamisation programme, tough Australian military advisers are training the South Vietnamese to play a bigger role in the war effort.

In Phuc Tuy Province south-east of Saigon, men from the special unit known as the Australian Army Training Team (Vietnam) are trying to weld local recruits into a cohesive regional force.

The recruits are taught patrolling and ambush techniques with the emphasis on the offensive rather than defensive. They are also shown the dangers of boody traps and methods to destroy them.

The Australian Army Training Team has about 100 men serving in Vietnam. It is the most highly decorated of any Australian unit serving in Vietnam and has just been awarded the United States Meritorious Unit Commendation.
