THE FIRST LANDSLIDE, ESTIMATED TO HAVE CAUSED DAMAGED OF MORE THAN GBP1,000,000 STERLING, IS THOUGHT TO HAVE BEEN STARTED BY THE WEIGHT OF NEW BUILDING ON THE SLOPING GROUND.

    AGRIGENTO IS NEAR THE SOUTH WEST COAST OF SICILY AND ITS HILLY, ROCKY GROUND LIES ON A LAYER OF SOFTER CLAY. IT WAS FOUNDED BY GREEK SETTLERS ALMOST 2,500 YEARS AGO UNDER THE NAME OF AKRAGAS. IT WAS EVENTUALLY TAKEN OVER BY THE ROMANS AND MUCH LATER BY THE ARABS. THE PRESENT-DAY CITY HAS A POPULATION OF SOME 75,000 AND IS A POPULAR TOURIST CENTRE, FAMOUS FOR ITS ANCIENT GREEK TEMPLES SEVERAL MILES BELOW THE CITY IN A VALLEY.

    YESTERDAY'S LANDSLIDE CAUSED THREE BUILDING TO COLLAPSE. TEN OTHERS, INCLUDING THE CATHEDRAL, WERE DAMAGED, BUT NO WAS INJURED, THOUGH SEVERAL PEOPLE WERE TAKEN TO HOSPITAL SUFFERING FROM SHOCK.
