  • Description

Ahmed Fathi Ridwan, newly appointed Ambassador of the United Arab Republic to the court of King Hussein of Jordan, arrived at Amman Airport, October 27, to resume diplomatic relations between the two countries after a two year break.

The newly healed breach almost came apart again the following day, when all the UAR propaganda sources were turned full blast on King Hussein, because of a remark made in a speech to the Jordanian Army at Akaba, October 28, in which he said his desert army was ready to save the Iraqi people from Communism should the Kassem regime be overthrown. He also said it was for the Iraqi people alone to decide their own fate.

Pro-Nasser newspapers in the Lebanon stated "The free, and the free alone will liberate Iraq. Slaves should keep their mouths shut." The implication being that King Hussein is a British stooge.

General Kassem himself was certainly not grateful for King Hussein's offer of help. In a hospital bedside interview with a Baghdad newspaper, October 28, he described the King as "a scion of treason".
