Israel Foreign Minister Golda Meir and Health Minister I. Barzilai July 24 want to Lydda?

  • Description

Israel Foreign Minister Golda Meir and Health Minister I. Barzilai July 24 want to Lydda Airport, Tel Aviv, Israel, to bid farewell to a 16-member Israel medical team as it left to bring much-needed medical aid to the Congo Republic - chaos-stricken after the disturbances which followed independence nearly 4 weeks ago.

Among the team, all volunteers, were surgeons, gynaecologists, an anaesthetist, nurses and other medical assistants.

Israel was one of the first countries to offer medical aid to the Congo when the grave threat to health in Leopoldville was reported after the disruption of Belgian-controlled medical services.

The Belgian Government claims that the 600 Belgian doctors in the Congo on June 30, independence day, have stayed on, but that in many cases have been prevented from carrying on their duties because of interference from unruly Congress medical staff.

Congo's Premier Lumumba - in his anti-Belgian attack at UNO - gave as evidence of Belgium's failings in the Colonial Congo the fact that not a single Congolese had been trained as a doctor by the time independence was granted.
