  • Description

As the two-week United Nations Environment Conference drew to a class in Stockholm today (Friday), there was a renewed and bitter attack on United States "imperialism" from the chief Chinese delegate, Mr. Tang Ke.

The conference finally succeeded in adopting a 25-point declaration to guide governments in the handling of the worldwide environment crisis. But this was only achieved by avoiding formal voting on many amendments, notably the Chinese insistence on the destruction of all biological, chemical and unclear weapons.

Mr Tang again called for the adoption of a Chinese principle calling for the prohibition and destruction of all such weapons, declaring that they "seriously pollute and damage the environment".

He once again made specific reference to American "aggression" in Vietnam and Indochina -- especially condemning the use of chemical weapons in the conflict.
