Background: Fifty-two Khmer civilians, at least ten of them children, were reported massacred by communist-led insurgents in the ruined town of Ang Snuol near Phnom Penh this week.

Newsmen and relatives returning to the town saw the bodies on Saturday (January 4),the day after it had been recaptured by government troops.

Insurgents entered the town -- destroyed in the fighting last year -- on January 1st at the start of their current offensive around Phnom Penh. The victims of the massacre had all apparently been shot or bayoneted before the insurgents set fire to their homes on the outskirts of the town. There was only one survivor.
