    WEST BERLIN TODAY (TUESDAY) - 1ST SEPTEMBER - AND CEREMONIES TO MARK THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE OUTBREAK OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR. GERMANY INVADED POLAND ON THE 1ST OF SEPTEMBER 1939.

    THE GOVERNING MAYOR OF WEST BERLIN, HERR BRANDT, ACCOMPANIED BY OFFICIALS OF THE CITY GOVERNMENT AND HERR OTTO BACH, PRESIDENT OF THE CITY PARLIAMENT LAID WREATHS ON MEMORIALS AT THE BRITISH, AMERICAN AND FRENCH CEMETERIES IN COMMEMORATION OF THE DEAD OF TWO WORLD WARS. WEST BERLIN HAS NO CENTRAL MEMORIAL TO THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER.

    THE PARTY WENT FIRST TO THE BRITISH WAS CEMETERY IN CHARLOTTENBURG, WHERE HERE BRANDT LAID THE WREATH IN THE PRESENCE OF THE BRITISH COMMANDANT. HE THEN WENT TO THE UNITED STATES HQ IN THE CLAYALLEE, AND LAID ANOTHER DURING A 'RETREAT CEREMONY' MOUNTED BY UNITED STATES FORCES STATIONED IN THE CITY. FINALLY TO THE FRENCH HQ AT "QUARTER NAPOLEON" NEAR THE KURT-SCHUMACHER-DAMM, WHERE AFTER INSPECTING A GUARD OF HONOUR, WEST BERLIN'S MAYOR LAID THE THIRD WREATH.

    (WEST BERLIN ALSO MARKED THE OCCASION TODAY WITH TRADE UNION RALLIES, STAGED WITH THE THEME: "THE NEXT WILL BE WON ONLY BY DEATH". EAST BERLIN ALSO COMMEMORATED THE ANNIVERSARY BY TELEVISING A SPEECH BY THE EAST GERMAN LEADER, HERR ULBRICHT TO A SPECIAL SESSION OF THE PARLIAMENT. (VOLKSKAMMER).
