Background: The Malawi President, Ngwazi Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda, was greeted with some spectacular formation displays by hundreds of Malawi vouths when he attended the opening ceremony of Malawi's tenth annual Youth Week at Nasawa Young Pioneers Training Base on Sunday (31 March). Nasawa was established in 1963 -- a year before independence -- and was the first of 21 Young Pioneer Camps now flourishing in Malawi
During Youth Week, school children university students and members of the League of Malawi Youth give their services free of charge to complete useful tasks for the community. These range from building bridges and dispensaries to cleaning up market areas.
Around 350,000 young people are engaged in completing 1,500 different projects.
SYNOPSIS: Nasawa training base for Young Pioneers was chosen for the opening ceremony of Malawi's Tenth Annual Youth Week on Sunday. The ceremony was attended by the President of Malawi and Commander-in-Chief of the Young Pioneers, Doctor Hastings Banda.
Nasawa was the first training base to be set up by Doctor Banda in 1963. Now there are twenty-one throughout the country.
At the opening ceremony, the assembled young people gave a spectacular mass formation display. Afterwards they buckled down to a week of hard work during which they will give their services free of charge to complete useful tasks for the community. The young people are school children, university students and members of the League of Malawi Youth.
