    MORE THAN 1,500 YOUNG GREEK NAVAL RECRUITS TOOK THE OATH AT A SPECIAL CEREMONY AT SCARAMANGA NAVAL BASE NEAR ATHENS ON TUESDAY. THEY HAD COMPLETED TRAINING, AND WERE READY FOR ACTIVE SERVICE MORE THAN TWO MONTHS AHEAD OF SCHEDULE.

    THE RECRUITS WERE INSPECTED BY MR PAPACONSTANTINOU, THE UNDER-SECRETARY FOR NATIONAL DEFENCE, BEFORE THEY TOOK THE OATH OF ALLEGIANCE.

    ON JULY 31, MR PETROS GAROUPHALIAS, THE MINISTER OF DEFENCE, ANNOUNCED THAT THE CALL-UP OF CONSCRIPTS FOR THE ARMED FORCES FOR 1964-65 WOULD TAKE PLACE TWO MONTHS EARLIER THAN USUAL. THEY MUST JOIN BEFORE AUGUST 11TH, INSTEAD OF IN OCTOBER.

    HE SAID THE EARLIER DATE WAS DUE TO "TECHNICAL REASONS." HE ADDED: "IN NO WAY SHOULD THIS BE CONSTRUED AS HAVING ANY CONNECTION WITH THE PRESENT STATE OF PREPAREDNESS OF THE GREEK ARMED FORCES FOLLOWING THE CYPRUS CRISIS."
    MEANWHILE THE GREEK NAVY IS AT PRESENT BASED IN SCARAMANGA BAY, AND MAINTAINING FREQUENT PATROLS IN THE AREA OF THE ISLANDS.
