  • Description

A TOTAL OF 64 PEOPLE DIED ON FRIDAY (4 MARCH) NIGHT WHEN A CANADIAN PACIFIC AIRWAYS DC-8 JETLINER CRASHED AND BURST INTO FLAMES ON LANDING AT TOKYO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. THERE WERE EIGHT SURVIVORS.

THE PLANE, WHICH CAUGHT FIRE AFTER PLOUGHIN INTO A BANK SEPARATING TOKYO BAY FROM THE RUNWAY, WAS CARRYING 62 PASSENGERS, NINE CREW AND A TRAINEE STEWARDESS.

THIS WAS THE SECOND OF THREE SERIOUS PASSENGER AIRCRAFT CRASHES IN OR NEAR TOKYO DURING THE PAST MONTH. A MONTH AGO, A JAPANESE BOEING 727 CRASHED INTO TOKYO BAY WITH A LOSS OF 133 LIVES - THE LARGEST NUMBER EVER KILLED IN A SINGLE PLANE CRASH.

AND EARLY TODAY, A BRITISH BOEING 727 CRASHED ON MOUNT FUJI, 50 MILES FROM TOKYO, KILLING 124 PASSENGERS AND CREW.

THICK FOG CLOSED TOKYO AIRPORT ON FRIDAY EVENING AND THE PILOT OF THE DC-8 DECIDED TO WAIT AND SEE IF THE WEATHER WOULD CLEAR. HE CIRCLED THE AIRPORT FOR 40 MINUTES BEFORE DECIDING TO FLY ON TO TAIPEI (TAIWAN).

HE HAD ALREADY SET COURSE FOR TAIPEI WHEN TOKYO CONTROL TOWER TOLD HIM THAT THE WEATHER HAD CLEARED AND HE COULD LAND.

THE PLANE BEGAN A NORMAL APPROACH FOR AN INSTRUMENT LANDING. ABOUT 1.8 KILOMETRES (1 MILE 175 YARDS) FROM TOUCHDOWN, THE PLANE WAS SEEN TO DROP ABOUT 25 FEET IN ALTITUDE AND THE CONTROL TOWER TOLD THE PILOT TO ABANDON HIS ATTEMPT TO LAND.

THE PILOT THEN MADE AN EMERGENCY REQUEST FOR THE APPROACH LIGHTS ON THE RUNWAY TO BE DIMMED AS THEY WERE TOO BRIGHT. AS THE CONTROLLER IN THE TOWER REACHED FOR THE SWITCH, THE PLANE DISAPPEARED FROM THE RADAR SCREEN, AND CRASHED. BEACON TOWERS WERE SMASHED AND A CONCRETE BREAKWATER AT THE END OF THE RUNWAY HAD A LARGE GASH TORN IN IT.

NINE PEOPLE WERE THROWN CLEAR OF THE CRASHED PLANE. ONE DIED LATER.
