TRANSCRIPT: INTERVIEWER: (SEQ. 9): "Do you think you are getting sufficient support up here on the Laotian border?"

SOLDIER: "No, not anywhere near the artillery support the people need. We've had quite a few people out, we can't seem to get the fire missions in for them...(INDISTINCT). All we have for them is mortars, and this isn't doing enough. We need the heavy stuff."

INTERVIEWER: "I hear artillery over there."

SOLDIER: "It doesn't fire for us. It's firing for other people. We're getting food, but we're having a lot of trouble getting ammunition... (INDISTINCT) ... we've been told that ammunition is not available."

Background: While South Vietnamese troops fighting inside Laos continue to encounter heavy resistance, tensions also appear to be growing between South Vietnamese and United States troops on the Vietnamese side of the border. The American soldiers at Quang Tri, a firebase just inside South Vietnam, are responsible for security on the Vietnamese side of the border. They complain that South Vietnamese forces get the supplies and support the U.S. forces lack.

This film, shot by a United States camera crew, highlights one of the consequences of the growing Vietnamisation of the war. It comes at a time when Washington spokesmen have just said (Friday 26 Feb.) U.S. infantry combat troops may be sent into Laos to protect missions aimed at rescuing U.S. helicopter crews.
