  • Description

A mass rally was staged by students at Dar es Salaam University on Wednesday (July 29) in protest against Britain's policy on arms sales South Africa.

The students, numbering several hundreds, ran around the campus chanting, shouting anti-british slogans and carrying large portraits of Communist and Socialist leaders.

The demonstration was the first such protest to be staged in Tanzania, which has stated that it will leave the Commonwealth if Britain resumes arms sales to South Africa.

After their public show of displeasure with Britain, the students gathered in the University Assembly Hall for addresses by student leaders.

It was at the Assembly Hall that they handed over money and clothing to the African Unity Liberation Committee, the results of a week-long collection campaign by the students. It was emphasised by the students, according to reports, that the money was intended for "buying bullets."
