  • Description

Police detained nearly 1,000 students following a riot at Milan University on Friday (16 June) in which scored of people were injured.

The outbreak of violence began when Milan Police Chief Ferruccio Allitto was barred from entering the campus where 3,000 students were holding a left-wing demonstration.

Police reinforcements were then called in and the students were ordered to remove red flags hanging from the university's windows.

In the fighting, students threw Molotov cocktails and the police responded with tear-gas grenades.

Following the hand-to-hand battle, nearly 1,000 students were taken away in police buses and the university always half-wrecked.

The students' unauthorised demonstration was held to protest a planned march through the city by the right-wing Milan Citizens' Committee. That march, also banned by the police, did not take place.

Following the clash, the university was ordered closed until 20 June so that the damage -- most of it caused by students building barricades -- could be repaired.
