  • Description

Membership of UNESCO, (the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation) rose to 141 on Monday (1 November) with the admission of Angola by an overwhelming vote at the UNESCO general conference meeting.

SYNOPSIS: The conference, which is scheduled to last for five weeks, is taking place at the Kenyatta conference centre in Kenya's capital, Nairobi.

There were a hundred and four votes in favour of Angolan membership and none against. Three countries, the United States, Zaire and Argentina, abstained.

The lack of U.S. enthusiasm is connected with the United States objection to the continued presence of Cuban troops in Angola, while Zaire backed the losing side in the Angolan civil war. Angolan Minister of Justice, Sr. Diolgenes Boavida, told the conference, after the vote that Cuban troops were in Angola to help fight South African opposition to the ruling MPLA government, and not to keep the government in power. Rhodesia was accused by Algeria at Tuesday's session of massacring defenseless civilians in Mozambique, and the conference was asked by the Algerian delegate to condemn such aggression.
