Background: Italy, who are considered one of the strongest contenders for the 1970 World Cup honours, won their first match in Mexico when they beat Toluca 5-3 at Toluca Stadium on Sunday, May 24.

Italy began slowly against the surprising skill and speed of Toluca. For most of the first-half Toluca dominated play. They deserved to score first, which they did through Pereda from a 25th minute free-kick.

But a free-kick inn the 37th minute brought Italy the equaliser through RIVA.

In the second half both teams borough on substitutes. Mazzola for Italy almost immediately tested the Toluca goalkeeper, but it wasn't until the 10th minute of the second half that Italy went into the lead, when Gori scored following a Riva free kick.

Riva scored again two minutes later to give Italy a 3-1 lead. But Toluca responded with their second goal in the 16th minute when Reyes beat the Italian goalkeeper.

Substitute Dino Zoff in the Italian goal was very unsettled, and Toluca pressed hard, often penetrating the Italian defence, but it was the Italian side who led 5 - 2 in the closing moments of the match. Toluca, however, had the consolation of scoring one more from a penalty to make the final score Italy 5, Toluca 3.
