  • Description

Scientists are making the final preparations for the launching on Tuesday (1 September) of a British Black Arrow rocket carrying a space satellite from Woomera rocket range in Central Australia. Provided there are no technical hitches a three-stage Black Arrow rocket will be placing a 180 lb (81.6 kilos) satellite into a near-polar orbit round the Earth to make the United Kingdom the world's sixth space power.

The launch will mark the end of four years intensive development by British scientists. The gold-plated satellite called Orba will carry test equipment to pave the way for a scientific package to be launched next year.

If Tuesday's launch is successful, Britain will join the Soviet Union, The United States, France, the People's Republic of China and Japan as a member of the space club.

Britain has previously launched satellites using United States rockets and next week's launch will mark the first all-British effort.
