  • Description

WHILE BRITISH OFFICIALS WERE PREPARING TO FLY TO SALISBURY ON SUNDAY TO DELIVER AN ULTIMATUM TO THE REBEL GOVERNMENT, MR. IAN SMITH ATTENDED A BATTLE OF BRITAIN MEMORIAL SERVICE IN SALISBURY CATHEDRAL. ALSO AT THE SERVICE WERE MR. CLIFFORD DUPONT, THE MAN WHO HAS REPLACED THE GOVERNOR IN THE REGIME, MR. GERALD HARPER AND LORD GRAHAM, MINISTERS IN THE ILLEGAL REGIME.

MR. SMITH FOUGHT IN THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN AGAINST GERMANY IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR. WHILE PILOTING AN RAF FIGHTER AIRCRAFT HE CRASHED AND WAS SCARRED FOR LIFE.

THE SOUTH AFRICAN HIGH COMMISSIONER, MR. MONTGOMERY, WAS ALSO PRESENT.

ON THE SAME DAY MR. SMITH CAUSED A CRISIS BY SAYING THAT HE HAD AGREED TO THE VISIT BY BRITISH OFFICIALS ON CONDITION THEY HAD TALKS AT GOVERNMENT LEVEL. BRITISH GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS INSISTED THAT THE VISIT DID NOT IMPLY THE START OF NEGOTIATIONS OR ANY RECOGNITION OF MR. SMITH'S GOVERNMENT.

MR. HARPER READ THE LESSON DURING THE REMEMBRANCE SERVICE AND MR. DUPONT LAID A WREATH. AFTERWARDS MR. AND MRS. SMITH AND MINISTERS JOINED THE CONGREGATION IN A PROCESSION.
