  • Description

The Supreme Court of Zaire on Sunday (4 December) officially proclaimed President Mobutu Sese Seko as Head of State for a further presidential term, following a national ballot.

SYNOPSIS: Voting took place on Friday (2 December) and was a simple task, because President Mobutu was the only candidate. The people were voting to elect him as leader of the ruling Popular Movement for the Revolution, a post that automatically makes its holder president of the country. President Mobutu, who has led his country since 1965, received 98.16 % of the vote cast. Under modifications made to the constitution in 1974, the president is elected for a five-year term, which is renewable only once. The Head of State has many tasks. He is also Head of the National Legislative Council. He acts as the chief executive, controls foreign policy and the judiciary, and is Commander-in-chief of the armed forces and the gendarmerie.
