  • Description

The former leader of the then Cambodia -- now the Khmer Republic -- Prince Norodom Sihanouk, on Friday (June 1) urged the United States to recognise his government in exile immediately, so as to achieve peace in the Khmer Republic "without victor or vanquished".

Speaking soon after his arrival in Algiers for a four day visit to Algeria, Prince Sihanouk said his only condition for immediate reconciliation with Washington was that the Untied States should "drop" the Khmer President, General Lon Nol.

If President Nixon rejected his "peace proposal" Prince Sihanouk said he would continue the war and planned to "liberate Phnom Penh in the not too distant future".

He said the military situation was extremely favourable.

The Prince who lives in exile in Peking is on a nine nation tour of Africa and Eastern Europe.
