Background: The trial of five Italians charged with spying for the Soviet Union in 1968 opened in Rome today. The chief accused is Lucio Quarantelli who is charged, among other things, with revealing secret information, fraud, espionage and revealing state secrets. Among the other accused are three former minor members of the Foreign Ministry. The prosecution alleges the men were involved in passing on secret information by ordering more copies of secret documents than were necessary.
