  • Description

Malaysian security forces wiped out a seven-man guerilla band in a ten-minute clash in the Borneo state of Sarawak on Friday. It was the first major clash with Sarawak's Communist guerillas since the Malaysian government terminated its free pardon offer to the rebels last January.

The clash occurred near the coastal town of Lundu, about 60 miles (97 Kms) from the Indonesian border in jungle terrain. Seven guerillas were killed without loss to the Malaysian forces. The bodies were flown to Lundu and fingerprinted.

Malaysia's free pardon offer was aimed at winning over the estimated one thousand Communists in Sarawak, who lost the support of Indonesia after the end of the confrontation with Malaysia.

However, only a handful of Communists surrendered and the Malaysian government announced the ending of the pardon at the beginning of this year.
