  • Description

TROOPS OF THE UNITED STATES NINTH INFANTRY DIVISION PACKED THEIR BAGS ON TUESDAY (1 JULY) IN READINESS FOR THEIR DEPARTURE FROM THE MEKON DELTA NEXT WEEK. THEY ARE TO BE THE FIRST OF THE 25,000 AMERICAN TROOPS TO BE WITHDRAWN FROM VIETNAM.

THERE WERE JOYFUL SMILES AND WAVES ALL ROUND AS THEY LEFT THE AREA BY RIVER LAUNCH. BUT IT WAS NOT THE SAME STORY FOR THEIR COMPANIONS IN THE BRIGADE'S RANGER TEAM. THEY STAYED BEHIND TO CONTINUE OPERATIONS.

MEN OF THE NINTH DIVISION ARE EXPECTED TO BEGIN FLYING OUT TO HAWAII NEXT TUESDAY, AND BY THE END OF AUGUST THE REMAINDER OF THE 25,000 MEN WILL HAVE GONE.

IN CASES LIKE THESE, SOMEONE ALWAYS HAS TO STAY BEHIND. THE RANGER BRIGADE FLEW OFF ON OPERATIONS ON THE MEKONG DELTA. THEY HAD TO SEARCH BUNKERS, WADE THROUGH PADDY FIELDS AND MAKE THEIR WAY THROUGH SWAMPS AND CREEKS.
