Background: INTRODUCTION: Israel's champion basketball team Maccabi Tel Aviv has gone to the top of the European Cup table with a narrow victory over Italy's Sinodina Bologna. A capacity crowd at Tel Aviv's Yad Iliyahu stadium cheered the home side on to a 92 to 88 point win on Thursday (19 February). It was the seventh in a series of 10 semi final matches. Tel Aviv and Bologna are now almost certain to fight out the Cup final.
SYNOPSIS: Maccabi Tel Aviv, playing in the yellow uniforms were on the attack from the start of the match. Much of the Israeli attack is directed through Maccabi's two forwards, both over 6 feet 10 inches (2.3 metres) tall. In this play, Earl Williams uses his height for a jump shot.
In the early stages, Bologna lacked concentration and missed a number of opportunities. Here, Marcos Lata attacks but loses the ball to Tel Aviv's Moti Aroesti. This time Williams makes no mistake.
The Italians maintained the pressure with some fine work around the quay and accurate long shots. But Tel Aviv retaliated with a high speed attack through Aulcie Perry, beating the Italian defence with a lay up.
The two sides are traditional rivals in the Cup competition. The last time they met earlier this year, Bologna won by a point.
Marcos Lata shows that championship form by breaking through the Tel Aviv defence and sinking his own lay-up on the second rebound.
Well into the second half it was anyone's match. Some positive passing around the Tel Aviv defence provided Renato Vilalto with another long shot opportunity. And a superb shot from Vilalto tied the scores.
Bologna could only manage another two goals in the closing stages, while Tel Aviv persisted with its high speed game to score another four baskets and win the match 92 points to 88. The eight match in the semi final series will be played on Thursday (26 February).
