  • Description

REPORTERS AND CAMERAMEN WERE PERMITTED ON MONDAY TO SEE THE RESULTS OF AN UNDERGROUND ATOMIC BOMB EXPLOSION CARRIED CUT 1,200 FEET BELOW THE SURFACE NEAR CARLSBAD, IN NEW MEXICO, U.S.A., EXACTLY ONE YEAR BEFORE.

THE EXPLOSION WAS CALLED "PROJECT GNOME" AND WAS PART OF AN OPERATION DESIGNED TO DEVELOP THE PEACEFUL USES OF ATOMIC ENERGY.

OBSERVERS WENT DOWN BY LIFT AND THEN BY AN UNDERGROUND RAILWAY TO SEE THE EXTENT OF THE CAVITY LEFT BY THE ATOMIC BOMB EXPLOSION. THE BOMB WAS EQUIVALENT TO MORE THAN THREE MILLION TONS OF TNT.

ABOUT 28 THOUSAND TONS OF RUBBLE WERE DISLODGED LEAVING A CAVITY WITH A VOLUME OF ABOUT ONE MILLION CUBIC FEET. EXPERTS ARE NOW INVESTIGATING HOW MUCH OF THE ROCK COMPLETELY DISINTEGRATED AND ALSO THE EFFECTS ON RADIOACTIVITY AND ISOTOPES.

OFFICIALS IN CHARGE OF THE PROJECT SAY THAT THE EXPERIMENT WAS A SUCCESS AND OPENED UP NEW AVENUES OF INVESTIGATION. THERE IS NO TRACE OF THE EXPLOSION ON THE SURFACE AND NEWSMEN VISITING THE UNDERGROUND EXPLOSION AREA MORE NO SPECIAL GARMENTS. LEVELS OF RADIOACTIVITY WERE DESCRIBED AS "SAFE".

RESULTS OF THE EXPERIMENT HAVE LED SCIENTISTS TO ABANDON THE IDEA OF TRYING TO CREATE STEAM ENERGY WITH UNDERGROUND EXPLOSIONS. ALTHOUGH IT WAS FOUND TO BE POSSIBLE, IT OFFERED NO FINANCIAL OR PRACTICAL ADVANTAGES OVER OTHER METHODS.
