  • Description

QUEEN ELIZABETH GOT AN IMPRESSIVE RECEPTION TODAY (TUESDAY) WHEN SHE VISITED COLOGNE -- THE RHINELAND CITY WHICH WAS DEVASTATED BY BRITISH BOMBERS IN WORLD WAR TWO. SHE DROVE THROUGH STREETS LINED BY CROWDS 12 DEEP TO THE CITY'S GREAT CATHEDRAL, WHICH SURVIVED THE BOMBS.

IT WAS THE EIGHT DAY OF HER 11-DAY STATE VISIT TO WEST GERMANY. THE PEOPLE OF COLOGNE CROWDED THE STREETS AND OLD BOMB SITES TO GIVE THE QUEEN THE NOISIEST WELCOME SO FAR.

THE WELCOME SYMBOLISED ONE OF THE MAIN AIMS OF HER STATE VISIT -- TO MARK AN END TO THE BITTERNESS LEFT BY TWO WORLD WARS. RAIN, HOWEVER, MARRED PROCEEDINGS, AND WAS FALLING STEADILY WHEN SHE ARRIVED AT THE GREAT GOTHIC CATHEDRAL.

BUT IT FAILED TO DAMPEN THE MASSIVE WELCOME. THE QUEEN WAS SHOWN AROUND THE TWIN-SPIRED CATHEDRAL BY THE ARCHBISHOP OF COLOGNE, CARDINAL JOSEF FRINGS.

(LATER, SHE LEFT FOR DUESSELDORF, THEN SAILED BY RHINE STEAMER FOR DUISBURG TO VISIT A STEELWORKS).
