  • Description

The ancient market town of Llangollen in North Wales is famous for its International Musical Esteddford --- a festival of folk song and dance held there each summer.

The festival has been running since 1947, drawing together thousands of visitors and competitors from al over the world in the common language of music.

This year, Llangollen welcomed amateur competitors from more than 30 countries --- almost all the Europeans and many from Asia and Africa. After months of rehearsal, they came to take part in a wide variety of folk singing, folk dancing, choral and instrumental competitions.

On Thursday (4 July), the various national teams competed for an International Trophy for folk dancing. The competing groups of twenty were made up of dancers in national and district costumes, musicians, flagbearors and others.

The International Eisteddfod is supported entirely by voluntary workers and donors working for the promotion of international peace and goodwill. The word "eisteddfod" itself is Welsh for "session" or "assembly" and the Llangollen Eisteddfod organisers claim a great success in bringing the various nationalities together through music in times of international stress.
