    THE UNITED STATES SUPREME COURT YESTERDAY (MONDAY) UPHELD THE BAN ON RACIAL SEGREGATION IN PUBLIC ACCOMMODATIONS (RESTAURANTS, HOTELS ETC) UNDER THE CIVIL RIGHTS ACT WHICH WAS SIGNED INTO LAW BY PRESIDENT JOHNSON IN JULY. THE RULING CAME IN A DECISION ON AN APPEAL INVOLVING A MOTEL IN ATLANTA, IN THE SOUTHERN STATE OF GEORGIA.

    THE SUPREME COURT, ALSO RULED THAT HE CIVIL RIGHTS LAW REQUIRED DISMISSAL OF CHARGES AGAINST THREE NEGROES ARRESTED FOR STAGING A SIT-IN DEMONSTRATION BEFORE THE ACT BECAME LAW. THIS RULING COULD ALSO SET A PRECEDENT FOR ABOUT 3,000 SIMILAR SIT-IN CASES STILL PENDING IN VARIOUS SOUTHERN STATES.

    (WITHIN HOURS OF THE SIGNING OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS LAW EARLIER THIS YEAR, THE OWNER OF THE ATLANTA MOTEL FILED A SUIT TO BLOCK ITS ENFORCEMENT. HE ARGUED THAT "THE FACT THAT NEGROES ARE INVOLVED IN THIS ISSUE IS PURELY INCIDENTAL. THE FUNDAMENTAL ISSUE IS WHETHER CONGRESS HAS THE RIGHT TO TAKE AWAY FROM A PRIVATE BUSINESS CONCERN THE OWNER'S CHOICE OF RUNNING HIS FIRM AS HE WISHES AND CHOOSING HIS OWN CUSTOMERS".)
