  • Description

Bad weather did not prevent voters in Ceylon flocking to the polls on Wednesday, July 20, in the second general election of the country in the last four months. After the last elections the lack of a decisive majority by any party contributed to instability.

There are 393 candidates contesting for the 151 seats of Parliament. The main contest is between the rightwing United National Party, (UNP) of outgoing Prime Minister Dudley Senanaike and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) led by Mrs. Rsirina Bandaranaike, widow of the former Prime Minister Solomon Bandaranaike, Bandaranaike.

The SLFP has no-contest pact with the Trotskyist Lanka Sama Samaj Party and the Communist Party. The UNP, which had the biggest single block of seats in the outgoing Parliament - 50 - have Democracy because of the electoral alliance of the SLFP.
