  • Description

During the summer months, natural hot springs gushing from rocky hill and mountainside, provide Icelanders with perfect conditions for outdoor swimming.

Now the springs are channelled to supply man-made pools with hot water - enabling people to swim all the year round. At Reykjavik, Iceland's first indoor 'Hot-Spring' pool has been opened.

Several outdoor pools are also under construction. These too provide all-season swimming centres. During winter the water temperature will rise to 130 degrees, falling to 37 degrees in very hot weather.

Before the introduction of pools Icelanders had to rely on the hot springs for swimming. These are found in every part of the island, both singly and in groups, and are particularly numerous in the western part of the southern lowlands.
