American Federal Bureau of Investigation officers began a nationwide hunt on Friday (7 January) after delayed-action bombs were found in bank vaults by police in New York City, Chicago and San Francisco. The police were tipped off about the bombs--which were apparently planted months ago--by anonymous letters describing a bizarre plot to "kidnap property" to secure the release of what were called "political prisoners".
Three bombs were placed in each of the three cities--one of the San Francisco devices exploded last September.
SYNOPSIS: New York's Wall Street branch of the first National City Bank...one of the nine banks in three American cities which were targets for time bombs on Friday. Police in New York, Chicago and San Francisco were tipped off about the bombs by anonymous letters. The letters described a bizarre plot to "kidnap property" to secure the release of what were described as "political prisoners". New York police learned about the bombs the night before but had to wait until morning when time locks opened the safe deposit vaults where the bombs had been hidden in three of the city's banks. This bank in Chicago was also a target...three bombs were placed indifferent banks there, too. The bombs had apparently been planted last autumn and some were timed to go off in March and others in April. Each contained less than a pound of gunpowder but the blest would have been enough to rip the front off the boxes and perhaps kill anyone unlucky enough to be nearby. The bombs were hacked to timing devices made from calendar clocks. The warning letters gave police the exact locations of the bombs and warned that the so-calls "demonstration bombing" was a warning the unless what were called "political prisoners" were released, the next long-term bombs might even be placed in office now being built. After the bombs in the Chicago banks were removed, there was business as usual...except in the vault areas.
In San Francisco, bombs were found in two banks. Police revealed that the third bomb planted in the city went off last September...apparently because of a faulty timing device. The man who rented the safe-deposit boxes in which the bombs were found was the ??? in all cases. Police are searching for the mystery terrorist, who gave a Chicago address. On Saturday, the investigation moved to Washington, where officials of the Federal Bureau of Investigation have collected the evidence from the three cities and are directing the operations. The warning letters came from a group calling itself the "movement of Amerika" spelled with a "k". The German spelling is often used by radical to describe the United States.
