  • Description

THE 39TH LOS ANGELES INTERNATIONAL MOTOR SHOW OPENED IN THAT CITY OCTOBER 27 WITH OVER 400 MODELS FROM SEVEN COUNTRIES ON DISPLAY. AMONG THE MANY ADVANCED DESIGNS SHOWN WAS A CAR SPRAYED WITH FLUORESCENT GOLD PAINT FOR SAFER NIGHT DRIVING.

TWO INTERESTING EXHIBITS FROM BRITAIN: A REPLICA OF QUEEN ELIZABETH'S PERSONAL ROLLS ROYCE LIMOUSINE - ELEGANTLY COMPETING FOR ATTENTION AGAINST "REGULAR" AND "COMPACT" LINES, AND A 1904 ROVER SALOON WHICH HAD APPRECIATED IN VALUE THROUGH THE YEARS TO OVER GBP8,000.

FROM JAPAN CAME THE CHEAPEST CAR AT THE SHOW - THE 'BLUEBIRD DATSUN', PRICED AT JUST OVER GBP550. A SMART JAPANESE CONVERTIBLE, THE 'FAIRLADY DATSUN' WAS ONLY ABOUT GBP700.

AMERICA'S NEW COMPACT CARS INDICATED SOME HARD COMPETITION FOR THE COMMERCIALLY SUCCESSFUL SMALL CARS IMPORTED FROM EUROPE. THE SMALLEST COMPACT WAS THE 'CORVAIR MONZA' AT NEARLY GBP900. AMERICAN EXPERIMENTAL CARS, OF ACCENTED FUTURISTIC DESIGN, WERE THE CORVETTE "SHARK" BY CHEVROLET, THE SEBRING 'SPIDER' CORVAIR AND THE 'MONTE CARLO' BY PONTIAC.

AMONG UNUSUAL FEATURES REVEALED FOR THE FIRST TIME AT THE SHOW WERE: CARS OF TOMORROW WITH CHROMIUM ENGINES AND WITHOUT BACK SEATS; INDEPENDENT FRONT AND REAR BRAKING AND CORNERING LIGHTS.
