  • Description

Osvaldo Smerelli, the number-one contender for the European Middleweight title, was in Kumasi's Ashanti Stadium, Ghana, (14 December), to take on the Ghanaian and West African Middleweight champion Joe Oke in a ten-round fight.

The twenty-seven-year old Smerelli, was two years older than his Ghanaian opponent and weighed-in seven pounds (three killogrammes) heavier than Oke, at eleven stone and eight pounds (61.7 kilos).

The two men have a very similar style and were evenly matched for the bout. The fight went the full ten rounds, but the Italian had to use his experience to survive being knocked down in the ninth. The referee had to separate the two fighters on a few occasions throughout the generally open and clean fight.

Oke won on a points-decision. It was only Smerelli's third defeat since he turned professional in 1969.

Friday-night's tournament was the second big boxing event sponsored by the Ghana Boxing Promotion Syndicate.
