Background: A large crowd attended the Christian Democrat reunion in Navona Square, Rome today as the President of the Catholic Worker's Union spoke in honour of May Day. At the conclusion of Signor Penezzato's speech a helicopter landed in the square and took on board a Statue of our Lord given as a fraternal gift from the workers of Rome to the workers of Latina (a small city near Rome). The helicopter then flew to St. Peter's Square where the Pope gave his blessing to the Catholic workers and to the statue.
The Italian Communist Party held its reunion in the Popolo Square, where the large crowd was addressed by Signor Ferdinando Santi, the Secretary of the Socialist Confederation of Labour.
These meetings are only part of the political activity taking place in Rome at this time of impending elections, and large posters are on display everywhere.
The Communist workers have identified themselves with the Russian achievement of launching the first man-made artificial 'moon' containing a living body.
