  • Description

THE UNITED NATIONS SECRETARY GENERAL, U THANT, TODAY (FRIDAY), APPEALED FOR AN END TO BLOODSHED AND VIOLENCE IN CYPRUS. HIS MESSAGE WAS SENT TO MARK THE DAY WHEN TROOPS IN CYPRUS PUT ON THEIR BLUE BERETS AND WENT ON DUTY FOR THE FIRST TIME AS MEN OF THE UNITED NATIONS PEACE FORCE.

MEN OF THE CANADIAN CONTINGENT JOINED BRITISH TROOPS ON GUARD AT KEY POINT IN NICOSIA, AND ALONG THE "GREEN LINE" DIVIDING THE GREEK AND TURKISH QUARTERS IN THE CITY REPLACED BRITISH UNITS WHO'VE BEEN KEEPING THE PEACE FOR ABOUT A MONTH.

IN AN ADDRESS TO THE CANADIANS, GENERAL GYANI SAID THAT THEY WOULD HAVE TO BE "ABSOLUTELY IMPARTIAL" AND NOT INTERFERE IN MOVES TO GET BOTH COMMUNITIES ON THE TROUBLED ISLAND SETTLING THEIR CONSTITUTIONAL PROBLEMS. GENERAL GYANI ADDED THAT HE HOPED HIS MEN WOULD NEVER HAVE TO OPEN FIRE, BUT HE ACKNOWLEDGED THEIR RIGHT TO DEFEND THEMSELVES IF ATTACKED.

IN THE MEANTIME, ADVANCED PARTIES OF SWEDISH, IRISH AND FINNISH TROOPS HAVE ARRIVED IN CYPRUS TO PREPARE FOR THE ARRIVAL OF THESE NATIONAL CONTINGENTS FOR THE U.N. FORCE IN ABOUT A FORTNIGHT'S TIME.
