  • Description

Smugglers at Nigeria's frontiers are now the major health hazard in the current cholera epidemic sweeping West Africa, the Chief Medical Adviser to the Nigerian government said on Monday (21 December). He was speaking at two-day conference of medical experts in Lagos to review protection measures against any cholera outbreak in Nigeria.

Dr. Adesuyi told the meeting that cholera was at Nigeria's doorstep with the recent reports of cases in neighbouring Dahomey.

He said that there was little or no provision for a mass vaccination programme, but measures had to be taken to protect staff at airport, border posts, seaports and other vulnerable points. Smugglers Creek fishermen were a particular danger because they crossed international boundaries away from official entry points. Ways would be found to protect people in the areas they operate, said the doctor.
