  • Description

The Australian soccer team's challenge for a place in the World Cup finals next year almost came to an end in Tehran on Friday (August 24) when Iran won 2-0.

The Australians came to Iran with a solid three goal lead from the first leg in Sydney last week but were shocked by a two goal burst from Iran in the first half.

In the 15th minute winger Ali Parvin was brought down in the penalty area and the Iranian captain Parviz Qhelichkani slammed the ball high into the net.

And it was Qhelichkani who scored again in the 31st minute with a 20 yard shot which went in off the bar, striking Australian goalkeeper Jim Fraser on the way.

Twice in the second half the Iranian skipper had a chance to equalise the overall score and right back Ebrakim Ashiani hit the bar, but the packed Australian defence held out until the final whistle to go thought to meet South Korea in a playoff for a place in the Munish finals.

In the fifteenth minute Iras attacked.

Winger Ali Parvin was brought down in the penalty area and the referees awarded the penalty.

Over eighty thousand Iranian soccer fans cheered at the prospect of reducing Australia's first leg lead.

Iran's captain Parviz Qhelishkani took the crucial kick -- and gave the australian goalkeeper Jim Fraser little chance.

The Iranian captain has played sixty times for his country.

The Australians tried in vain to take control of the game. But their attacks broke down and they were forced into defence.

In the thirty first minute Qhelichkani struck again, to put Iran two up. His twenty yard shot went in off the bar after hitting the goalkeeper.

But Iran failed to equalise the overall score.
