An Algerian handball team defeated a Portuguese team by 23 goals to 20 in the first game of a three-match tour on Sunday (22 December). It is the first visit an Algerian team has made to Europe.
Although both teams were fairly evenly matched, the Algerians' age and experience showed through. And, towards the end of the game, they pulled ahead. The Portuguese team was mostly composed of young players.
The sport of handball is growing in popularity and -- in the last few years -- has started to become popular in Western Europe. Before, it was mainly played in the Middle East, Eastern Europe, North Africa and Scandinavia.
SYNOPSIS: Handball ... and in Lisbon last week an Algerian team -- in dark shirts -- began a three-match tour of Portugal in fine style.
Both teams were fairly evenly matched... and moves like these were often duplicated.
It's the first time an Algerian handball team has visited Europe where the game has been gaining in popularity over the last few years. Until now it has been popular mainly in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Scandinavia and North Africa.
By half-time the Algerians were in the lead by ten points to nine ... and in the second spell their greater experience began to tell and they increased their narrow lead.
The Portuguese players were all younger than their Algerian counterparts and this showed in their playing. They were keen -- but not as wily as the Algerians.
In the end, experience triumphed and the Algerians won by twenty-three points to twenty.
