    TURKEY TODAY (SUNDAY) COMMEMORATED THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEATH OF KEMAL ATATURK, FOUNDER OF THE TURKISH REPUBLIC. THE BIGGEST CEREMONY WAS IN ISTANBUL WHERE YOUNG STUDENTS PLACED WREATHS AT THE BASE OF ATATURK'S STATUE.

    KEMAL ATATURK DIED ON NOVEMBER 10, 1938 AT THE AGE OF 57. HE BECAME PRESIDENT OF TURKEY IN 1920, AN OFFICE HE HELD UNTIL HIS DEATH. THE SON OF A CUSTOMS OFFICER, ATATURK HAD A BRILLIANT ARMY CAREER. IT WAS HE WHO WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR TURKEY'S VICTORY AGAINST BRITISH AND COMMONWEALTH TROOPS AT GALLIPOLI IN THE DARDENELLES DURING WORLD WAR 1.

    ATATURK MASTERMINDED THE DEFEAT OF GREECE AND ENDED THE TURKISH-GREECE WAR IN 1922. THEN HE WAS ABLE TO ATTEND TO TURKISH INTERNAL AFFAIRS AND INTRODUCED WIDESPREAD REFORMS. IN 1923 THE TURKISH SULTANATE WAS ABOLISHED AND A REPUBLIC ESTABLISHED WITH ATATURK KEEPING THE PRESIDENCY. ATATURK IS ACKNOWLEDGED AS BRINGING TURKEY THROUGH THE GREATEST CRISIS IN ITS HISTORY AND RE-ESTABLISHING ITS INTERNATIONAL POSITION.
