  • Description

ARMED COMMANDOS OCCUPIED POSITIONS IN CENTRAL BEIRUT ON SATURDAY (28 MARCH) AS TENSION EASED IN THE LEBANESE CAPITAL AFTER FIVE DAYS OF ARMED CLASHES.

THE CAPITAL WAS ALMOST BACK TO NORMAL FOLLOWING THE CLASHES BETWEEN THE COMMANDOS AND RIGHT-WING GROUPS WHICH CULMINATED IN RANDOM FIRING IN AND AROUND THE MAIN SQUARE OF BEIRUT ON FRIDAY (MARCH 27). A SWISS ENGINEER WAS KILLED WHEN HE DROVE THROUGH A ROAD BLOCK AND AT LEAST 30 OTHER PEOPLE ARE BELIEVED TO HAVE DIED IN THE CLASHES.

GOVERNMENT SECURITY FORCES PATROLLED PARTS OF THE CITY BUT THE SITUATION WAS STILL TENSE FOLLOWING AN EXPLOSION THAT SHATTERED THE WINDOWS OF A NIGHT CLUB OPPOSITE THE UNITED STATES EMBASSY ON SUNDAY (MARCH 29). A PALESTINE COMMANDO ORGANISATION CLAIMED RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE BLAST WHICH WAS APPARENTLY AIMED AT THE EMBASSY.

COMMANDO MARKSMEN OCCUPIED ROOFTOPS AND THE CLASHES WITH THE RIGHT-WING GROUPS WHO ARE MAINLY CHRISTIANS REVIVED FEARS OF A NATION SPLIT ALONG RELIGIOUS AS WELL AS POLITICAL LINES. THE COMMANDOS ARE MOSTLY MUSLIMS.

IN NORTH LEBANON COMMANDOS KIDNAPPED FOUR GENDARMES AND SEVEN CUSTOMS MEN ON SATURDAY AND WERE BEATEN OFF IN AN ATTACK ON A OTHER CUSTOMS POST IN THE AREA.
