  • Description

In Khartoum, Sudan on Sunday (23 May), President Jafaar El Nimeiry opened the recently-completed Friendship Hall, a cultural centre built with substantial aid from The People's Republic of China. The centre was opened as part of the Seventh Anniversary celebrations of Sudan's ruling Revolutionary Council.

China loaned 'GBP' 3,000,000 sterling (5,400,000 U.S. dollars) and 300 construction experts to build the hall. The centre is one of three projects being built in Sudan with Chinese help. The other projects are a 'GBP' 4,000,000 (7,200,000 U.S. dollars) textile factory being opened this week, and a major all-weather road.

The centre contains a theatre, a reference library, a banquet hall, and an international conference complex. The theatre, with 1230 seats, can be converted to a cinema. Additional facilities at the Friendship Hall include a shopping area, four secondary conference hall, a cafeteria and a roof garden.
