  • Description

An annual New Year reception for representatives of the Church was held in Ljubljana, in the Yugoslav state of Slovenia, on Friday (31 January).

The host was the Vice Premier of Slovenia, Mr. Rudi Cacinovic, former Yugoslav Ambassador to West Germany. He is the President of the Slovenian State Commission for Religious Affairs.

Guests representing various Churches, theological colleges and religious newspapers attended the reception. Friday's record attendance was interpreted as a sign of improvement in Church-State relations, which has been described as better than in other Yugoslav states.

Their relationship, however, suffered a setback recently when a State official was reported to have demanded the registration of all Church activities in his area.

A church newspaper, Druzina, followed up the story, quoting the Constitution on the Freedom of the Church. Material in that edition was considered illegal and the entire edition was confiscated. But Druzina is now publishing again and back on the streets.
