Background: THERE WERE SCENES OF GREAT EMOTION IN THE TURKISH-CYPRIOT QUARTER OF NICOSIA YESTERDAY (THURSDAY), AS THE BODY OF THE TURKISH PILOT -- WHO DIED AFTER PARACHUTING FROM HIS PLANE AND BEING CAPTURED BY GREEK-CYPRIOTS, DURING AN ATTACK ON XEROS -- WAS CARRIED THROUGH THE NARROW, BUT CROWDED STREETS.

TURKISH-CYPRIOT WOMEN WAILED AND SOBBED, AS THE COFFIN -- COVERED WITH THE TURKISH FLAG -- WAS CARRIED IN RELAYS BY SOLDIERS OF THE TURKISH NATIONAL ARMY, TURKISH-CYPRIOT FIGHTERS AND POLICE. ON ITS JOURNEY TO MARTYRS SQUARE, THE COFFIN PASSED THE STATUE OF KEMAL ATATURK (FOUNDER OF MODERN TURKEY). THE COFFIN WAS LOADED INTO A UNITED NATIONS HELICOPTER FOR THE 160-MILE (257 KMS) JOURNEY TO ADANA, ON THE TURKISH COAST. THERE IT WAS TO BE LOADED ON TO A TURKEY AIRFORCE PLANE FOR THE FLIGHT TO A MILITARY AIRBASE NEAR ANKARA.

(THE FUNERAL WILL TAKE PLACE TODAY IN ISTANBUL. THE EVENT WILL ALSO BE COMMEMORATED BY A MILITARY PARADE IN ANKARA. BEFORE THE BODY LEFT NICOSIA, THE TURKISH-CYPRIOTS CARRIED OUT THEIR OWN POST-MORTEM.)
