THE LAST REMAINING U.S. TANK UNIT IS PREPARING TO LEAVE VIETNAM. IT IS THE 77TH?

  • Description

THE LAST REMAINING U.S. TANK UNIT IS PREPARING TO LEAVE VIETNAM. IT IS THE 77TH ARMOUR, WHICH HAS BEEN FIGHTING NEAR THE DE-MILITARISED ZONE FOR THE LAST TWO YEARS. FULL STRENGTH FOR THE UNIT IS 54 TANKS BUT NOW, AFTER TWO YEARS BATTLE, IT HAS ONLY 43 -- MANY OF THESE REPLACEMENTS. THERE ARE FEW OF THE ORIGINAL VEHICLES LEFT. BUT IT REALLY DOESN'T MATTER ANY MORE, AS, FOR THESE TANKS AND THEIR CREW, THE WAR IS OVER. THEY ARE GOING HOME.

SYNOPSIS: SOUTH VIETNAM -- AND THE GRADUAL WITHDRAWAL OF UNITED STATES TROOPS THE FAMOUS MARINES HAVE GONE, AND MOST OF THE TANK UNITS HAVE LEFT. ONLY ONE REMAINS -- THE 77TH ARMOUR, WHICH HAS BEEN FIGHTING NEAR THE DE-MILITARISED ZONE FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS. NOW IT, TOO, IS GOING -- IT'S M48 MEDIUM TANKS, AND MOST OF THE CREWS, ARE BEING SENT BACK TO AMERICA.

FULL STRENGTH IS NORMALLY 54 VEHICLES -- BUT THE WAR HAS TAKEN ITS TOLL. ONLY 43 REMAIN, AND FEW OF THESE ARE THE ORIGINAL TANKS.

NOW, RESPONSIBILITY FOR THANK-FIGHTING RESTS ENTIRELY WITH THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE. THIS UNIT IS PART OF THE SEVENTH CAVALRY, ARVN, IN TRAINING FOR OPERATIONS ABOUT TWO MILES SOUTH OF THE DMZ. IT IS EQUIPPED WITH M41 LIGHT TANKS -- SMALLER THAN THOSE THE AMERICANS USE, AND WITH LESS FIRE-POWER. AND, ALTHOUGH ACCORDING TO AMERICAN ADVISORS THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE CREWS ARE WELL-TRAINED IN HANDLING THEIR MACHINES, THEY HAVE NOT YET USED THEM IN BATTLE. IT IS NOT KNOWN, THEREFORE, JUST HOW THEY WILL REACT IN ACTION, HAVING TO CO-ORDINATE WITH INFANTRY, ARTILLERY AND AIRCRAFT AT THE SAME TIME. THE AMERICANS, WITH CONSIDERABLE COMBAT EXPERIENCE AND BIGGER TANKS, FOUND IT A DIFFICULT JOB. THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE, HOWEVER, ARE CONFIDENT THEY CAN COPE -- AND THEY MAY SOON HAVE THE CHANCE TO PROVE IT.
