General of the Army Douglas MacArthur celebrated his eighty-third birthday Saturday (26 January)...in his suite at the Waldorf-Towers in New York City.
A delegation of five cadets from the United States Military Academy at West Point called on the old warrior.Among the cadets was Colin P.Kelly the Third...son of America's first hero in World War Two.
When the general was first introduced to young Kelly...he remarked, with some feeling, "I knew your father well." Twenty-two years ago MacArthur announced personally that Captain Colin P.Kelly Jr.had been shot down...after scoring three direct hits on a Japanese battleship on 10 December 1941...three days after Pearl Harbor.Later MacArthur wrote President Franklin D.Roosevelt, suggesting that the flier's son...then nineteen months old...be nominated for appointment to West Point upon reaching manhood. The presidential appointment was approved...but young Kelly declined, preferring to seek entrance on his own merits.A cadet captain...he will be graduated this June.
Describing the youth as "in the hero class," MacArthur told him: "If you can do as well as he (Kelly's father) did...you'll be in the top grade.
