Background: SCARBOROUGH BEACH, WESTERN AUSTRALIA, AUSTRALIA

The first attempt to cross a continent in a solar-powered vehicle began in Western Australia on December 19. Before a large crowd of curious onlookers at Scarborough beach in the state capital of Perth, the lightweight vehicle, dubbed "The Quiet Achiever", set off on its arduous journey. It is the brainchild of international racing-car driver, Larry Perkins, and Hans Tholstrup, who hope to take four weeks to make the three-thousand-kilometre journey to Sydney on the eastern coast. The pair, who will share the driving, were presented with a flask of Indian Ocean water by the Western Australia Premier, Ray O'Connor, before they set off. The water will be ceremoniously tipped into the Pacific Ocean on their arrival in Sydney. The vehicle is topped with a panel of 20 solar cells which feed into two conventional 24-volt car batteries. About 500 watts is delivered to a small DC motor, giving The Quiet Achiever a top speed of 65 kilometres per hour.
