    The Victoria Dam was inaugurated by Sri Lanka's President Junius Jayewardene on April 7.The dam is part of the Victoria Multi-Purpose Project, and has been described as the linchpin of the Mahaweli River master plan.It includes the dam, a power station and the Victoria Reservoir, which is supposes to occupy considerable stretches of the main stem of the Mahaweli and its principal tributary in the Kandy District.Construction of the dam caused a major upheaval for townsfolk in the catchment area, forcing the resettlement of thousands of people.Six thousand families have already been evacuated from the town of Teldeniya to make way for the dam; it is estimated that 25-thousand people could be evacuated from valley townships to be flooded for the reservoir.Those seeking resettlement have said they want to be moved to a development area in groups, as they lived in their villages.They also want married children to be settled near their parents.Arrangements were being made to compensate those who lost their land and homes.Many of those who had to be evacuated were farmers, with strong emotional ties to their land.The State was reported to have made them a priority for resettlement.On the positive side, it is hoped the dam will provide enough irrigation to improve Sri Lanka's food production.The country has long been dependent on foreign have an initial installed capacity of 210 megawatts and the entire project should offer job-opportunities for 100-thousand people.
